Description
I have always loved comics. Ever since I was very small I loved characters such as cat-woman and Wonder woman.
Comics served another purpose, other than just being a source of great entertainment for an artistic kid.
I was slow to learn to read. That is actually putting it lightly. My teachers were convinced that I was dyslexic until my 14th birthday due to the fact that I seemed unable to learn how to read.
To be frank with you, I wasn’t unable to learn how to read I was unwilling. What did most at the time was watching american setcoms, so my English skills were quite well developed, however watching sitcoms did not exactly require me to read a whole lot, so I just didn’t.
The saving grace for me, when It came to reading was 1 comix: A comic rendition of the movie “Casper the friendly ghost”.
at 13 I became entranced with the movie “Casper the friendly ghost” and saw it in the theater almost 5 times. To support my love for this movie my mom bought me the comic book version of the film.
This led to the beginning of a tradition for me. Every night just after being put to sleep by my mother I would sneak the comic-book from under my pillow and start reading it. I couldn’t read much of it, but I could follow the progression of the story through the pictures and then read small words.
Though I didn’t know i at the time, this was actually my first step towards really learning to read.
Later I became emerced in the comic book series “ElfQuest” and from then on the ball just kept rolling.
Today I decided to pay homage to the comic book giants (DC, Marvel) who inadvertently brought me on the road to reading by creating the medium of comic books. I do this by drawing my own comic book hero; I don’t quite know who he is yet, but he is cute, right?
